2011 Football Players of the Week

  • Devan Sproles, Emory & Henry, Junior, Linebacker

    Sproles, a junior from Norton, Va., picks up his second weekly award of the season after helping the Wasps to a 30-6 year-ending win over Guilford. Sproles was second on the unit with nine tackles, but he also had a sack and broke up pass. His biggest contribution came in the form of three interceptions, which tied for sixth in the ODAC single-game record books with several individuals. The last time an ODAC athlete intercepted three passes in a game was in 2007 when Catholic's Nick Olivero turned the trick. Sproles intercepted one pass in each of the second, third and fourth quarters against the Quakers, with his final takeaway leading to a Wasps' touchdown.
  • Thaddeus Scruggs, Randolph-Macon, Senior, Running Back

    Scruggs, a senior from Fredericksburg, Va., helped Randolph-Macon to a season-ending win over Hampden-Sydney in the 117th playing of "The Game" in Ashland on Saturday. Scruggs helped lead a rushing attack that churned out 301 yards and an offense that posted 48 points and 567 yards on a Tigers' team that had not yet lost in the ODAC. Scruggs averaged 8.1 yards per rush on just 16 carries and he burst for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He set up his second score with a 60-yard dash on a screen pass. For the season, Scruggs is currently third in the ODAC with 911 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 190 carries (4.8 average).
  • Satiir Stevenson, Guilford, Freshman, Defensive Back

    Stevenson, a freshman from Roselle, N.J., helped Guilford to its first ODAC victory since the 2009 season with a 34-27 win over Catholic on Saturday. Stevenson returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter of the Quakers' road victory, which tied the game at 20-20 entering the second half after Catholic had gone ahead, 20-6, 20 seconds into the second quarter. He also had seven tackles (3 solo), which ranked second on the team, and posted half a TFL. Stevenson’s touchdown was his second this season, tops among Quakers’ defenders, and his two interceptions also lead the team.
  • Travis Lane, Hampden-Sydney, Senior, Quarterback

    Lane, a senior from Richmond, Va., controlled the offensive tempo and helped lead the Tigers to 42 points and 446 yards of total offense in H-SC's 42-35 win over Washington and Lee to clinch the 2011 ODAC title and a spot in the NCAA Division III Football Tournament. Lane also did not turn the ball over for the second consecutive game. On the day, he was 21-of-33 for 331 yards and four touchdowns. He started the game going 3-for-5 for 57 yards and a 29-yard touchdown pass on the Tigers’ first drive. On the next scoring drive, he was a perfect 3-for-3 throwing for 75 yards, including a 42-yard strike to Sean Cavanagh. In the second half, Lane maintained the Tigers' tempo on the first drive with a 3-for-3 series for 64 yards and a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Vance.
  • Rob Look, Washington and Lee, Senior, Linebacker

    Look, a senior from Dallas, Texas, picks up his second weekly award of the season after helping Washington and Lee to a 49-13 win over Catholic. Look made seven solo tackles on the way to 10 total stops that included a tackle for a loss. He also had a pass break-up as the W&L defense held Catholic to 254 passing yards, which was 76 yards below its conference-leading per game average coming into the contest. The defense combined with W&L's offense to hold the Cardinals to just 22:27 in time of possession compared to 37:33 for the Generals. Look leads the Generals with 83 tackles, which is fourth in the ODAC.
  • Kirk Rohle, Hampden-Sydney, Senior, Running Back

    Rohle, a senior from Mechanicsville, Va., carried the Tiger offense in the 63-49 win over Guilford with five touchdowns and 232 all purpose yards. On the ground, the senior back ran for four scores and 139 yards on 22 carries while averaging 6.3 yards-per-touch. Through the air, Rohle averaged 18.6 yards-per-catch hauling in five passes for 93 yards and a score. When the Tigers were down 14-0 early, Rohle was the first to move the chains and find the end zone for the Tigers. The Tigers could not get a first down in the first quarter, but Rohle then accounted for 38 of the 51 yards needed to score early in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14-7. He then tacked on two more touchdowns to end the second quarter, while giving the Tigers their first lead of the day – one they would not give up. He continued his work into the third quarter scoring both of Hampden-Sydney’s touchdowns – his first on a seven yard run and second on a 43-yard reception. His longest rush came on a 41-yard run that set up his fourth touchdown of the day.
  • Miniard Culpepper, Catholic, Senior, Defensive Back

    Cuplepper, a senior from Milton, Mass., helped setup the Cardinals game-winning drive as Catholic came back in the game's final seconds to defeat Emory & Henry on Saturday. With 2:35 to play and Emory & Henry with the ball and a 24-21 lead, Culpepper recovered a fumble on E&H's first play of the drive in the Wasps' backfield. That led to the Cardinals' game-winning touchdown with 0:21 on the clock. Culpepper was one of seven Cardinals with at least five tackles as he made five stops from his defensive back position. He also broke up a pass as CUA held E&H to just three points in the second half.
  • Charlie Westfal, Wash. and Lee, Senior, Quarterback

    Westfal, a senior from New Canaan, Conn., picks up his second straight weekly award after leading the Generals to a 52-42 win over Bridgewater. The Washington and Lee offense racked up 606 yards of total offense, including 444 yards on the ground. Westfal completed 11-of-15 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed 16 times for 109 yards and two more touchdowns. In the fourth quarter when W&L score 21 points and the two teams combined for 35 points, Westfal ran for 86 yards and both of his touchdowns. In the victory, Westfal set a new W&L career total offense record with 6,508 yards, breaking the former mark of 6,383 held by Christian Batcheller since 1999. For the season, Westfal has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 1,141 yards and 10 touchdowns with just one interception. He has also rushed 108 times for a career-best 602 yards (sixth in the ODAC) and six more scores (tied for fifth in the ODAC).
  • Rob Look, Washington and Lee, Senior, Linebacker

    Look, a senior from Dallas, Texas, helped lead Washington and Lee to a 34-30 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday by totaling a career-high 17 tackles and one sack. Look made one of the key plays in the game when he sacked Randolph-Macon quarterback Zac Naccarato for a loss of nine yards on a 3rd-and-goal from the 2-yardline with just over four minutes remaining. It forced the Yellow Jackets to settle for a 29-yard field goal and allowed the Generals to take the lead and score the game-winning touchdown on the ensuing possession. For the season, Look leads W&L with 62 tackles, 2.0 sacks and one interception.
  • Charlie Westfal, Washington and Lee, Senior, Quarterback

    Westfal, a senior from New Canaan, Conn., lead Washington and Lee to a 34-30 come-from-behind win over Randolph-Macon by rushing 17 times for 98 yards and completing 7-of-12 passes for 231 yards and one touchdown. Westfal led the Generals on a pair of scoring drives in the fourth quarter, rushing for 45 yards and converting a 4th-and-2 and a 3rd-and-10 on the game-tying drive with 9:26 left in the game. He also rushed in a two-point conversion to tie the game at 27-27. Then, trailing 30-27 with 3:55 to go, Westfal led W&L on a 69-yard drive, completing a 62-yard pass play to Alex Evans that led to the game-winning score with 2:09 left in the game. With his 329 yards of total offense, Westfal moved to within 147 yards of setting a new W&L record for career total offense (6,237 yds.).

    Houk, a junior from Galax, Va., led all ODAC tacklers with 15 stops this past weekend against Washington and Lee, including seven solo stops. Houk also came away with a big takeaway for the Wasps' defense. Down 7-0 in the third quarter with the Generals driving, Houk came down with an interception in the E&H end zone to squander a W&L possession that began on their own 12-yard line. The pick marked the second interception of the season for Houk. He is seventh in the ODAC in tackles with 44.
  • ZAC NACCARATO, Randolph-Macon, Freshman, Quarterback

    Naccarato, a freshman from Spotsylvania, Va., had his best day as a Yellow Jacket signal-caller as he led R-MC to a 51-34 victory Friday night at Catholic University. Naccarato completed nearly 81-percent of passes in going 25-of-31 for 372 yards and four touchdowns, all career-highs and ODAC weekly highs. Naccarato threw three of his four touchdowns to Christian Cook, who hauled in 13 passes for 212 yards. He threw a pair of six-yard scoring strikes, one each to Cook and Vance Hendren (7 for 104), but his other two scoring passes covered 95 combined yards via 29 and 66-yard touchdowns to Cook. Naccarato is currently fourth in the ODAC in passing yardage (1,071) and touchdown passes (8).
  • DEVAN SPROLES, Emory & Henry, Junior, Linebacker

    Sproles, a junior from Norton, Va., helped the Emory & Henry defense hold Randolph-Macon to just 10 points as E&H opened its ODAC schedule with a 17-10 win. Sproles recorded 10 or more tackles for the third straight week, and now leads the ODAC with 53 total tackles. He made 11 stops from his linebacker position, but also intercepted a pair of passes. His second interception preserved a 3-0 second quarter lead and perhaps the flow of the rest of the game as he intercepted a pass in the Wasps' end zone with R-MC on the three-yard line. E&H scored on the ensuing drive, opening up a 10-0 advantage.
  • LUKE HEINSOHN, Washington and Lee, Junior, Running Back

    Heinsohn, a junior from Charlottesville, Va., helped lead Washington and Lee to a 63-0 win over Guilford on Saturday by rushing for a season-high 167 yards and a career-high four touchdowns on just 12 carries. Heinsohn averaged 13.9 yards per carry, scoring on touchdown runs of 2 yards, 4 yards, 23 yards and 63 yards. For the season, Heinsohn has rushed for 423 yards and an ODAC-high eight touchdowns on 66 carries. The 2010 ODAC rushing champion, Heinsohn's 423 yards are currently third in the conference.
  • JEREMY BOWRY, Randolph-Macon, Senior, Linebacker

    Bowry, a senior from Chesterfield, Va., helped Randolph-Macon move to 4-0 on the season with a solid defensive effort that included a hand in a pair of turnovers. Bowry made seven stops on the day (3 solo) and collected a Frostburg State fumble. More importantly, he intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. The score marked the second of three unanswered fourth quarter touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets and gave R-MC some breathing room with a 28-14 lead. The intercepted was Bowry's second of the season. He leads the ODAC in interception return yards with 88. His two picks are tied for second.
  • KYLE BODEN, Emory & Henry, Sophomore, Quarterback

    Boden, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., became the first Emory & Henry quarterback to throw four touchdown passes since the 2007 season (Daniel Booher) as he led the Wasps to a come-from-behind victory with three second half touchdown passes including the eventual game-winner with 4:15 to play to give E&H a 34-27 win. Boden connected with nine different receivers on the day as he finished 30-of-52 for 245 yards and four scores. He and DaVon Ross teamed up for two touchdowns, including the game's final score. Boden also threw scoring strikes to Cleo Cooper and Chad Williams. The four touchdowns give Boden 11 TD passes on the season, currently second in the ODAC (14 by Travis Lane, H-SC).
  • SEAN STEWART, Hampden-Sydney, Sophomore, Safety

    Stewart, a sophomore from Alexandria, Va., patrolled the middle of the field for H-SC's defense from his strong safety position, tallying a game-high 11 tackles on seven solo stops and four assisted. He also added 2.5 tackles-for-loss for a total of 12 yards. In addition, he forced a fumble that the Tigers were able to recover in the first quarter. Stewart helped the Tigers hold Ferrum to one touchdown per-half in opening the season 3-0.
  • KYLE VANCE, Hampden-Sydney, Senior, Wide Receiver

    Vance, a senior from Onley, Va., broke Hampden-Sydney’s single-game record for receiving yards as he tallied 228 yards and a touchdown on 14 receptions. Vance started out the day with two 19-yard receptions – including one touchdown – on the Tigers’ first drive of the game that lasted under two minutes. Three of his other four receptions in the first quarter went for double digit yardage, including a 40-yard reception – his high for the day. He added three more receptions in the second quarter to end the half with 10 receptions for 155 yards and a score. He continued his work into the second half, with four catches for 33-, 18-, 7-, and 15-yards. Over the past two weeks, Vance has made 25 catches for 398 yards and five touchdowns.
  • JEFF MEHLHAFF, Bridgewater, Senior, Safety

    Mehlhaff, a senior from Louisa, Va., had a big day in the Eagles’ secondary as he played a part in two of Bridgewater’s four forced turnovers against Shenandoah. In the second quarter, Mehlhaff put the Eagles on the scoreboard with an interception and 32-yard return for a touchdown to give BC a 7-6 lead midway through the frame. In the fourth quarter, Mehlhaff forced a fumble of a Shenandoah receiver at the BC two-yard line, thwarting a potential scoring play and preserving 28-16 Bridgewater lead (BC eventually won 28-23). Mehlhaff finished with six tackles (five solo), including one for a loss, to go with his interception and forced fumble.

    Lane, a senior from Richmond, Va., was nearly flawless in the Tigers’ 56-17 win over North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday. The Richmond native completed 28 of his 32 attempts while throwing for 389 yards and seven touchdowns. Lane’s 87.5% completion percentage and seven touchdowns both rank second in ODAC history, and his seven scores tie a Hampden-Sydney record. Lane got the offense going from the start, scoring on the third play of the game. He led the Tigers on two more scoring drives in the quarter with five- and nine-yard touchdown passes. The second quarter brought another touchdown pass on a five-yard play to Kyle Vance. On the next drive, Lane led the Tigers 98 yards for the touchdown. Lane went 3-for-3 for 71 yards. The third quarter brought two more scores from Lane with a 25-yard pass to Vance and a one-play scoring drive via a 50-yard pass to Dallas Steelman. Lane capped his day with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Vance in the fourth quarter, the fourth time the duo connected on scoring plays.

    Wholey, a senior from Fredericksburg, Va., helped Bridgewater complete a come-from-behind victory by spearheading a defensive effort that kept the Eagles in the game before the offense could get untracked. Bridgewater forced a pair of turnovers and it was Wholey who came up with a big fumble recovery in overtime, eliminating St. Vincent's first and would-be lone opportunity to score in the extra frame. It also set up the game-winning 23-yard field goal by Will Davis. Wholey made a career-high nine stops on the day, including five solo tackles from his linebacker post.
  • GREG CORDIVARI, Catholic, Junior, Quarterback

    Cordivari, a junior from Downingtown, Pa., threw for a career-high 459 yards, which is the sixth highest total in school history. The Cardinals' signal-caller threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 1:01 remaining. He completed 31-of-48 passes to nine different receivers. The 459 yards are the most ever surrendered by McDaniel and the most by a Cardinals quarterback since Keith Ricca totaled 530 in 2008. Two of Cordivari's scoring throws came in the fourth quarter as CUA clawed back from a 36-24 deficit for a 39-36 win. He connected with Alonzo Cooke on strikes of 17 and 34 yards, and completed a two-point conversion to Jeff Frusciante on the final score.
