2013 ODAC Baseball Players of the Week

J.J. McDaniel, Shenandoah, So., UtilityApril 22, 2013McDaniel, a sophomore from Stafford, Va., put together a week that included the first Shenandoah cycle since 1996. McDaniel helped the Hornets to a 5-1 week by hitting .560 (14-for-25) with five doubles, a triple, three homers, 10 runs scored and 13 runs batted in. He also walked three times towards a .607 on-base percentage. The nine extra-base hits pushed him to a 1.200 slugging percentage. McDaniel had three multi-hit games, including two five-hit outings. In the first game against Washington and Lee, McDaniel was 5-for-6 with a double, two homers and seven RBI. He followed that up three days later by hitting for the cycle in a win over St. Joe's-Long Island. He went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, a homer, four runs scored and three RBI. For the season, McDaniel is hitting .328 with six homers and 33 runs driven in. He's eighth in the ODAC with a .597 slugging percentage. He and his teammates own the third seed in the upcoming ODAC Baseball Tournament.

Austin Gregory, Roanoke, So, PitcherApril 22, 2013Gregory, a sophomore from Roanoke, Va., appeared three times out of the bullpen for the Maroons and picked up two wins and a save as the Roanoke secured its first ODAC tournament placement since 2004. Gregory opened the week with two scoreless innings of two-hit ball to earn the win in a 4-3 10-inning triumph over Lynchburg. He picked up his second victory of the week with 2.2 innings of work in a 6-5 win over Eastern Mennonite. He gave up one run on four hits. In the nightcap of that series, he tossed the final two frames to record his second save of the season. On the year, Gregory is tied for the league lead with 20 appearances. He owns a 3-1 record with 37 strikeouts and a 2.86 earned run average in 44.0 innings of work.

Nick Fulk, Bridgewater, Jr., OutfielderApril 15, 2013Fulk, a junior from Broadway, Va., hit .417 in Bridgewater's 3-2 week as he went 10-of-24 with three doubles, two triples, eight runs scored and seven runs batted in. He also stole a pair of bases. He had a trio of multi-hit outings, including a 4-for-4 day with a triple, two RBI and four runs scored in a 19-2 win over Ferrum. He also went 3-for-6 in a 12-4 victory at Eastern Mennonite. He smacked a pair of doubles and a triple on the way to three RBI and a run scored. For the season, Fulk is third in the ODAC with a .407 batting average. He also tops the conference lists with 57 hits, 41 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.

Robert Gallet, Bridgewater, Jr., PitcherApril 15, 2013Gallet, a junior from Stafford, Va., went the distance for the Eagles in a 12-1 win over Roanoke in game two of a double-header on Saturday. He allowed just two hits and only walked one batter in giving up one run. He punched out 11 Maroons in the effort, marking a season-high for the Eagles' righty. The win improved his season record to 5-3 with a 5.25 earned run average in 48.0 innings of work. The complete game was his first of the season.

Jake Fletcher, Randolph-Macon, Sr., 2nd Base/ShortstopApril 08, 2013Fletcher, a senior from Deltaville, Va., helped lead Randolph-Macon to a 4-1-1 week by hitting .484 (15-for-31) with two doubles, a homer, six runs batted in and six runs scored. He also stole six bases in as many attempts, and walked twice to post a .529 on-base percentage. He had five multi-hit games, including a pair of four hit efforts in a 10-10 tie against Lynchburg and an 11-7 win over Eastern Mennonite. In the 16-inning marathon against LC, he went 4-for-7 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. He stayed hot the rest of the weekend in a sweep of EMU by going 7-for-9 with a double, two RBI, three runs scored and six steals. Defensively, Fletcher was in on four double plays and fielded 27-of-28 chances cleanly.

Corey Armentrout, Bridgewater, So., PitcherApril 08, 2013Armentrout, a sophomore from Harrisonburg, Va., picked up a win and a save during the week to help the Eagles post a 5-1 record. Armentrout pitched seven innings and allowed one run on five hits in a 2-1 win over No. 18 Shenandoah. He struck out six and walked just two. He pitched 1.2 innings in relief to get the save in a 7-6 win over Hampden-Sydney. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one. For the season, Armentrout is 3-0 with one save and a 4.34 earned run average in 37.1 innings pitched.

Jonathan Mason, Bridgewater, Sr., OutfielderApril 01, 2013Mason, a senior from Sterling, Va., collects his second weekly award of the season as he hit .688 to help the Eagles to a 3-1 record on the week. The Eagles were 2-1 against nationally-ranked teams with a win over No. 12 Shenandoah and a split with No. 8 Christopher Newport, in addition to victory over Washington and Lee. Mason had a slugging percentage of 1.125 and a .750 on-base %. He was 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer in an 11-2 win over Shenandoah. He was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a triple and two stolen bases in a win over W&L. In an 18-6 win over CNU, he was 4-for 7 with three runs, four RBIs and two doubles. He was 1-for-2 with a stolen base in the loss to CNU. Mason is currently sixth in the ODAC with a .398 batting average. His .505 on-base percentage in third, which is helped by an ODAC-best 17 walks. He collected three free passes this past week.

Alex Tucci, Virginia Wesleyan, So., PitcherApril 01, 2013Tucci, a sophomore from Stewartstown, Pa., even his season record at 3-3 with a complete game win as part of two appearances last week. After throwing a scoreless inning of relief in a 5-3 loss to Randolph-Macon, Tucci kept 12th-ranked Shenandoah at bay with nine strong innings in a 3-2 VWC win. He gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out eight Hornets, a personal season-high. Tucci has started in seven of his eight appearances this season, recording four complete games, which is tied for second in the ODAC. He boasts a 2.98 earned run average in 54.1 innings of work, the third-most innings pitched in the conference.

Will Salley, Washington and Lee, Sr., OutfielderMarch 25, 2013Salley, a senior from Augusta, Ga., went 7-for-17 (.412) from the dish as he helped lead the Generals to a 3-1 week that included a doubleheader sweep of Roanoke College. Salley generated 12 runs for the Generals as he drove in five and scored seven times. He had at least one hit in each of the four games, including a trio of two-hit efforts. He accounted for six runs in the Generals 10-8 win over Earlham as he belted a pair of homers on the way to driving in three runs and scoring three times. The two homers stretched his consecutive games with a homerun-streak to four. Salley is currently hitting .313 on the season. He's #1 in the ODAC with 15 walks (3 this past week) and tied for third with five homeruns.

Daniel Stanley, Eastern Mennonite, Sr., PitcherMarch 25, 2013Stanley, a senior from Henrico, Va., picks up his second weekly award of the season after blanking Hampden-Sydney, 7-0, for his fourth complete game and third shutout, both tops in the ODAC. In nine innings of work, Stanley gave up just five hits and walked a pair while striking out two. He improved his record to 4-2 with the win, while also lowering his earned run average to 2.47, seventh in the conference. His four victories are tied for second, while his 43.2 innings on the hill are fourth.

Mitchell Keeler, Randolph-Macon, Fr., Catcher/Des. HitterMarch 18, 2013Keeler, a freshman from Mechanicsville, Va., put together hit for the cycle in which he accounted for 10 of Randolph-Macon's 13 runs scored in a 13-11 win over Hampden-Sydney. Keeler went 5-for-5 with four runs scored and six runs batted in. He had an RBI double to get the scoring started in the bottom of the first. He belted a three-run homer in the third to make it 9-1 in favor of R-MC. He tripled in one more run in the fifth before batting in his final run with a single in the seventh frame. Keeler, who did not play in R-MC's first nine games, has had three straight multi-hit outings and is batting .667 on the season.

Drew Crawford, Guilford, Jr., PitcherMarch 18, 2013Crawford, a junior from Newport, Tenn., Twirled an eight-inning gem in Guilford's 8-1 win at Lynchburg in his first start as a Quaker. He scattered five hits (all singles), walked three and struck out four while allowing just one run (earned). The outing was his fourth and longest of the season, lowering his ERA to 3.94.

Corbin Lucas, Shenandoah, So., OutfielderMarch 11, 2013Lucas, a sophomore from Grottoes, Va., helped the Hornets to a 3-0 week, including a conference sweep of Guilford College. Lucas went 6-for-12 (.500) from the dish, registering two hits each of the three contests. He notched three RBI in a 5-1 win over Mary Washington, and followed that up with three more driven in during a 6-5 game one win over Guilford. He had a two-run double in the fourth inning of that contest. In game two, Lucas had another RBI double to help the Hornets to a 9-2 victory. He finished the week with seven runs batted in.

Darrell Thompson, Shenandoah, Fr., PitcherMarch 11, 2013Thompson, a freshman from Stephens City, Va., went the distance to lead Shenandoah to a 5-1 win over Mary Washington last week. In a full nine innings of work, the Hornets' lefty scattered nine hits and walked one while surrendering just one run. He fanned eight in the process. The win was the first for Thompson in his collegiate career. He lowered his earned run average to 3.07 in 14.2 innings of work covering three starts.

Jonathan Mason, Bridgewater, Sr., OutfielderMarch 04, 2013Mason, a senior from Sterling, Va. Hit .455 in the Eagles 3-0 week as Bridgewater gave up just six runs in defeating Mary Washington (10-0) and sweeping Randolph-Macon (10-5, 8-1). Mason went 5-for-11 over the three games, but also walked five times to post a .625 on-base percentage. Four of his five knocks went for extra bases as he had a triple and a homer to go along with two RBI in game one against R-MC. He had a double in each of the other remaining two contests. For the week, Mason scored five runs and drove in six more. He has 16 RBI through 18 games, which ranks atop the ODAC.

Matthew McInaw, Emory & Henry, Fr., PitcherMarch 04, 2013McInaw, a freshman from Honey Brook, Pa., pitched seven scoreless innings to help the Wasps picked up their second shutout in a week's time. He allowed just three hits and walked one batter while fanning four. After taking nearly 11 years to post a shutout (Apr. 17, 2002 vs. Roanoke), Emory & Henry has blanked two opponents in the past seven days.

Kyle Armstrong, Eastern Mennonite, So., OutfielderFebruary 25, 2013Armstrong, a sophomore from Greenville, Va., had a breakout week for the Royals, as he batted .550 (11-for-20) with a team high seven runs batted in. Armstrong had a pair of triples and doubles, helping account for a slugging percentage of .850. He also scored six runs. Armstrong had multiple hits in four of EMU's five games, including a 4-for-5 game against Mount Saint Vincent in which he missed hitting for the cycle by a homerun. Twelve games into his EMU career, he is batting .364 with team highs of 16 hits and two triples.

Martin Henderlite, Lynchburg, So., PitcherFebruary 25, 2013Henderlite, a sophomore from Roanoke, Va., led the Hornets to a game two victory over York (Pa.) College on Sunday. The sophomore threw his first career complete game shutout in a two-hit effort over nine innings. He fanned nine and walked just two batters. He had five strikeouts through the first four innings. The last hit he allowed was with two outs in the fourth inning, after which Henderlite retired the final 16 batters of the game in order. Henderlite has not allowed a run in his last 15 innings of work to lower his ERA to 0.98.

Tim Benjamin, Randolph-Macon, So., CatcherFebruary 18, 2013Benjamin, a sophomore from Glenegl, Md., accounted for more than half R-MC's runs as the Yellow Jackets took down #8 Christopher Newport, 11-8, on Valentine's Day. The Jackets' catcher went 4-for-5 with a double and a solo homerun. He reached base six times in total (walked) as he scored three runs and drove in four more. He's currently batting .571 on the season.

Brandon Miller, Lynchburg, So., PitcherFebruary 18, 2013Miller, a sophomore from Vesuvius, Va., threw fired his second straight complete game of the season as he helped the Hornets upset sixth-ranked Birmingham-Southern, 7-2. In nine complete innings of work, he surrendered two runs (both earned) on seven hits without walking a batter. He struck out seven, giving him nine K's on the season. He has not walked a batter in his last 15 innings pitched

Keegan Dolan, Washington and Lee, Jr., OutfielderFebruary 11, 2013Dolan, a junior from Bethesda, Md., supplied plenty of power in the Generals first two games of the season, a pair of victories over Rochester College (Mich.). In a 12-0 win over the Warriors in game one, Dolan went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and two runs batted in. He followed that with a 3-for-3 outing in W&L's 5-2 win in game two as he smacked two more doubles, belted a homer, scored three runs and drove in two more. He added stolen base to his stat line.

Zach Whitaker, Hampden-Sydney, Fr., PitcherFebruary 11, 2013Whitaker, a sophomore from Roanoke, Va., fired his fourth career complete game and first of the 2013 season in a 1-0 win over the University of Mary Washington on Sunday. The 2012 ODAC Rookie of the Year tossed seven shutout innings, surrendering just four hits without a walk. He fanned one batter to earn his first victory of the season and lower his earned run average to 0.82 in 11 innings pitched.

John Macon Smith, Guilford, Jr., OutfielderFebruary 04, 2013Smith, a junior from Greensboro, N.C., started off his season with a bang in leading the Quakers to a 1-1 start. In his first at bat, Smith crashed a 3-0 run homer for an early GC lead. He knocked three hits and stole a base in the Quakers' 8-4 loss to Piedmont. On Sunday, Smith was back at it with two more hits and the game-winning run in the 10th inning of a 5-4 GC win over Piedmont. Smith was 5-of-9 on the weekend.

Daniel Stanley, Eastern Menonite, Sr., PitcherFebruary 04, 2013Stanley, a senior from Henrico, Va., started off the season just as new head coach Ben Spotts hoped his #1 arm would as Stanley went the distance to lead EMU to a season-opening 3-0 win at N.C. Wesleyan. Stanley fired seven scoreless innings in posting the complete game shutout. He surrendered just five hits, walked one and fanned five. He helped himself out of a jam in the fifth inning as he started a rare triple play to get out of the inning.
